AIMS

This module aims to provide a variety of data collection methods related to the culture and heritage activities, including using oral history as “cultures and memories collecting”

(intangible heritage) and to develop students’ employability skills in the process. The course will be enriched with the case studies of previous Ming-Ai (London) Institute projects, and projects undertaken by our partner museums.

The module aims to:

  • Review students’ future employability needs in cultural heritage organisations

  • Establish the understanding of research ethnic and funding application skills

  • Explore in-depth research and analytical skills

  • Debate the application of oral history in preserving intangible cultural heritage, exhibitions, and sounds archives

  • Critically analyse areas of cultures and memories within the field of oral history and critically examine and engage with a variety of themes of their choice

The application of oral history in preserving cultures and memories in the UK is supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund since 1994, it is commonly used in the museums to present people lives, and sounds archives are established among the national archives and local archives to preserve the memories (intangible culture heritage).

Therefore, this module is also suitable for community groups or individuals who would like to develop intangible cultural heritage project planning skill especially in culture and memories, to enhance their employment prospects.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Knowledge

Have a conceptual understanding of:

  • Critical evaluation of debates around the philosophy of social research and methodological issues in research design

  • Analytical understanding of a range of qualitative and quantitative research methods and forms of analysis, and ability to apply these to a novel context

  • Critical and reflexive applied knowledge of oral history project management, relevant to the intangible culture heritage

  • Understand the high levels of organisations, time management and responsibility for essential employment requirements

Skills

  • Develop skills in specifying a research question, reviewing and analysing published academic literature, and engaging in debates around the status of knowledge claims

  • Skills in the design of research projects appropriate to a given question, with an appreciation of inherent methodological trade-offs

  • Skills in the collection, organisation and analysis of relevant data

  • Ability to critically analyse a specific area of interest relating to oral history project management, and demonstrating originality of thought

  • Production of an oral history project management plan

  • Skills in enhancing employment portfolio

SYLLABUS

  • Research design, validity, reliability, reflexivity, ethics

  • Qualitative data (collection, management and analysis) and Quantitative data (survey design and administration)

  • Statistical analysis and graphical presentation of data

  • Archiving and cataloguing

  • Introduction to oral history

  • Case study of oral history in the context of the British Chinese communities

  • How to design heritage projects in the field of culture and memories

  • How to collect and manage intangible heritage materials e.g. an oral history recording and edit them for use within the digital collection

  • Funding application skills for culture heritage projects in the UK

  • Introduce communication skills which include verbal communication, written communication and body language

  • Provide an introduction to career management skills, develop students’ problem- solving and decision-making skills, and evaluate the portfolio of employability skills

TEACHING AND LEARNING

Students will be taught through a combination of lectures, seminars, guest lectures, workshops and visits.
